If you are a new convert to vegetarianism and still long for meat, opt for some of the vegetarian and vegan meat substitute products. They are no longer just tofu burgers. Soy products today are available to mimic chicken, turkey, fish, pork, and beef and they have fooled even die-hard meat-eaters. Soy sausage and soy bacon can easily be substituted for those made with real meat in any protein diet.

Following a protein diet vegetarian lifestyle, you will probably lose weight and be healthier than your meat eating friends on the same protein meat-inclusive plan. Vegetarian substitutes for meats have no cholesterol and are often lower in fat and calories while having the same amount of protein.

If you cannot stand the taste or texture of the vegetarian meat replacements, you can still follow a protein diet, but you will need to do it the old school way. Adopt more nuts, seeds and beans into your diet and cut out the pastas, breads and grains. Even whole grain products are not allowed on many protein diet vegetarian plans. Drink soy milk for a dairy replacement. If you do not like the distinctive flavor, try another milk substitute. Today, you have many more options for dairy: rice milk, almond milk, hemp milk, coconut milk and oat milk. Remember that tofu and TVP (textured vegetable protein) are your friends and can be flavored to taste like any type of meat. These, like commercial meat substitutes are high in protein and low in fat.
